Today we wake up at 4:30 to catch a train out to Brinton Carpets factory. We get there like 3 hours later and start the tour. They had planned out our entire day. We start first with a presentation from John Bain about what Brinton does, what projects they’ve worked on. They are a high quality carpet company that is over 200 years old. They work on projects for cruise ships, hotels, and conference centers. We then go over to the archive room and get to see carpet designs from years ago. They keep copies of every pattern they ever make. It is fascinating to see the patterns from so long ago, they are so beautiful and I would have used them in a project today. After they serve our entire group lunch, we head over to the designers and get to see what patterns they are working on currently and how they go through the process. Finally, they take us on a tour of the factory, where we see how they weave their carpets together. Even though we have a very knowledgeable, sweet, 85 year old man giving us the tour and telling us everything that is happening it is such a complicated process that I am still terribly confused. It was a very interesting experience to see how everything works and how much time goes into the entire process of making carpet.
